I think everyone should be able to choose when they die using a method that is the least painful including people that aren’t physically able to do it themselves. I really don’t see a big difference between being allowed to forgo certain treatments that would extend your life and allowing a doctor to deliver a lethal dose.
But for those that support this why refer to it as dieing with dignity? What wrong with calling it assisted suicide? That’s what it is! If people could really die with dignity then I’m all for it, but really how much dignity can there be when no matter what, you’re going to crap your pants?
A patient laid in bed, writhing in pain from cancer from head to toe. He tried to be brave and not let the pain show, but he couldent fool anyone. You could see it in his dead eyes. I guess you are supposed to die like that, you know, a few days later; maybe a few weeks later, even though the morphine no longer controlled the pain. As soon as the remainder of the morphine was injected into his IV, he seemed to relax and become very peaceful, and soon , he just fell asleep. About three minutes later, his heart stopped; he was now gone. But as his eyes started to slip away, he looked up, and with this shit eating grin he got sometimes, he said: ” Thanks, but it’s time for me to go. I’m sorry I can’t be there for you and your mother, but it’s time son.” All I could say was; ” I’m sorry Dad, but I cant see you like this, I love you so much.” These were the last words my dad and I exchcnged, as he drifted off into a great peace.
