Fear of god

I was just looking up the history of the ACLU and came across some anti-ACLU sites. It seems that the most popular anti-ACLU, or at least one of the highest ranked by Google when searching “ACLU History” is by Nedd Kareiva. So I did a search on just his name and a lot of sites came up in which many had some blurb about “put the fear of god in them” including Nedd’s stop the ACLU site. Why is it that anytime someone goes against the Christian rules someone else wants to put the “fear of god” in them? I’m just wondering cause…Isn’t “god” supposed to be nice? I heard rumors that the Christian god is a merciful one. Or was that Jesus? Maybe they’re like bad cop/good cop?

  1. God is merciful provided we come to Him on His terms, not our own. God is as you put it “nice”, He is actually so much more than just nice. He is gracious, loving, caring, wonderful, almighty ruler…He is a just and fair God. If we decide that we don’t want to do things God’s way then He will give us what we deserve. Eternity in hell. It is only because of God’s grace that he provided a way for us to come and be with Him in heaven. The way though Jesus Christ. It’s all in the Bible. Read in the Gosple of John. Why do some christian and some who call themselves christains get so hostile toward anti-christian values? I think that they forget that God is love and just want to attack to get their point acrossed. However I don’t feel we christain should stand back and let what this nation has been founded apon be swept away. Because when that happens the freedoms and blessing that we enjoy right now will be swept away with it.

I’ll play along and pretend for the sake of argument that there is this omnipotent being in control of everything. And, to make communication easier, I’ll use your language, and I’ll call this being “God”. If “God” is so just, then why does he let bad things happen to good people? Is he asleep on the job? Does he not care? Is he simply an asshole?

Your response probably has something to do with “faith”, or an “eternal reward”. But how does that help the person who is born into disadvantage, never hears “God’s” message, and, after living a life of inherent kindness (because some people can be good people even without the threat of “hell” or the promise of “heaven” looming over them), dies without being saved? According to your Bible, that person will go to hell. Is that just?

Assuming you’re from the United States, just what is it that you think our country was founded upon? Because, you know, almost immediately after the U.S. Constitution was completed, the new government passed a few amendments which were ratified by the states to make them part of the Constitution (you might have heard of the Bill of Rights?). Anyway, in case you’re not familiar with it, the very first Amendment says, in relevant part, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” So––and I don’t mean to distress you––we’re not a Christian nation. We can’t be. It would be unConstitutional.

But even so, nobody’s trying to sweep anything away. The majority of Christians I’ve met have a tendency to martyr themselves to demonstrate their faith–when they’re not even being persecuted. You are free to believe what you want. Just don’t impose your beliefs on me. That means you should let everybody marry whom they want, let them have sex with any consenting adult(s) they want (in any fashion that doesn’t infringe on the rights of others), and leave us to worship or not worship any being they see fit. Your “God’s” rules don’t apply to everybody. And the government has no place enforcing them.

  3. christians frequently use the term “god-fearing” as a positive attribute. fear of one’s creator, if there is one, is absurd on the face of it: you are what the creator made, you cannot be otherwise. spare me the free-will stuff – your free will is a consequence of the intellect (and its limitations) you were given, along with one’s inherent nature and the circumstances one experiences. all under the creator’s control. besides, if we think about genesis and accept the biblical version of creation, there is no other being, nor anything else that is not god. “in the beginning, god created the heavens and the earth…” etc. all by an act of will, and all from nothing (the void); therefore we exist only by his/her continuing will, and all of us are just the product of god’s imagination. that is to say, we are momentary expressions of his creativity. there is nothing in existence but god. must be awfully lonely, huh? the main thing you need to fear is waking up and finding out you really ARE the only thing in existence. so, you think up things to liven up the void, like lucifer and the 1/3 of the heavenly host that astonishingly were ready to follow an obviously hopeless and unpromising cause … something any self-respecting angel would know first hand. but better yet, if you really want to get a laugh or two, grab some clay, model a couple of thimble-brained primates, and let their offspring argue about which one of them speaks for the “one true god,” while you (the real one) remain absolutely silent. except for that sound you hear late at night when you look up at the star-studded sky and you’ve had maybe one too many – the sound of someone snickering.
