Failed Test
I just got a call from my doctor’s office. I failed the glucose test and now I have to take the three-hour test. I’ve also been informed that I’m “very” anemic. How is this possible? The night before I went in for my glucose test I had lentil soup. That may as well be iron soup. I’ve never been anemic before?! I eat beans as if it’s in a food group of its very own. This has to be a mistake.

Remember that the tests aren’t perfect. They tend to err on the side of false positives, to make sure they don’t let anyone slip through who might have trouble later. Try to not let it stress you.
We made the mistake of taking our OB too seriously the first couple of times he rushed us to the high risk doctors, who laughed and said, “You’re fine”.

Thank you for the reassurance Jay. I was just reading on the MayoClinic site that 50% of pregnant women become anemic and need iron supplements. I was just sure that with my diet that it wouldn’t be the case with me. And one of my coworkers said that she had to take the glucose test twice as well. Her second one came out fine. As a first timer I anything even slightly abnormal freaks me out. I just want a healthy baby. (Isn’t that every ones wish?)

Hey Erica,
My wife is almost 34 weeks in! Its been going by so fast and we can’t wait for the day to come for our daughter to be with us! Don’t worry about the test. My wife failed hers the first time too and dreaded to take the second one, but afterwards found out that she did indeed pass the second one. Good luck with everything and Congratulations!
