A few months ago when I was looking for a local pool with an infant swim class I came across the Infant Swimming Resource. The the video on their website just amazed me. They teach infants as young as six months old to be able to roll from stomach to back in the water fully clothed! They’ve had a lot of news coverage including a King5 news story from November 2007 from my local area (link no longer available). They don’t hide the fact that the babies are going to cry.
Her little-known program focuses on a child’s ability to self-rescue. Through repetition, instructors teach infants to roll on their backs and float – eventually calling out for help. Success requires resolve. Class is five days a week and there are lots of tears.
“Crying is their primary means of communication,” Patterson said.
Even though Sami seems decidedly unhappy, his parents say he’s making clear progress.
“You just want to have him as prepared as possible, so you’re willing to live with having him cry – he cries all the time anyway, so it’s okay,” said Marwan Dalle, Sami’s father.
Patterson says, because the training utilizes gross motor skills, the lessons are lasting.
“They’re going to retain it, the way they’re going to retain the ability to crawl or walk,” she said.
I know I couldn’t sit through the tears, but I think this class is a great idea. If I had a pool or water front property I think I would find a way to power through a class like that for Sophia, but since I don’t, I’ll settle for gently getting her comfortable in the water and watching her like a hawk!
I love the water and regardless of whether or not you choose to go through a self-rescue class with your infant or toddler I think it’s important to get them comfortable in the water for future swimming classes. The ability to swim is a great skill to have, so in the spirit of water safety I’m hosting a Huggies Little Swimmers Giveaway!
I am giving away TWO Huggies Little Swimmers fun in the sun kits*. Each kit includes a pack of Huggies Little Swimmers disposable swim diapers (I have one pack size medium and one pack size large), Moisturizing sunscreen lotion (SPF 50), Mild sunscreen clear mist (SPF 50), Sun sensors (stickers that monitor UVB exposure by changing color), 4-ounce bottle of bubbles, a little bucket for playing in the sand, and a mini sand farming implement (rake or shovel).

Oh and if you happen to have any first hand experience with the Infant Swimming Resource classes let me know how they went and if you would do it again.
What a great Summer Giveaway!! It just so happens we’re headed off on our 3 week vacation on Sunday and water safety is on my mind!
Sara Pattersons latest blog post… Don’t Look at the Score
I could really use these for our trip to the beach this summer, size medium.
I’d love to take an Infant CPR/Swim safety class, but have not found one in my area. It’s scary to think how quickly bad things can happen in water or out in the sun.
My tip would be to always cover up the baby with sunscreen, sunhats, and swim shirts. Sunburns are terrible!
Ooh pick me!
I linked to you on SMB.
we have a pool at my apartment so we are blowing through swimmers! would love some more!
Mary Jenkinss latest blog post… the world’s best diet secret revealed
I love your blog! Very refreshing after having to look at countless god-loving mommy blogs. My little Chloe is two months older than your Sophia. We love to check out what Sophia is up to and my sig. other loves the songs (Yes it’s true, Yes its true, Chloe is happy to sit in poo). I don’t care if I win, I just wanted you to know how much I enjoy hearing about your adventures with the little one.
In the off chance that I get picked, I’ll need large (for my cousin’s
butterballbig baby boy). I just wanted to check one last time… what is the maximum number of entries I can get? Like, say I were to comment here 523 times and put 61 posts on my blog about summer safety… would that give me 584 entries? How about three entries? (This is the peanut gallery!)Actually, I hope that the Susan Anderson woman above me wins. But I don’t see a link to her blog. Track her down! Make her give you an address.
I would love try these. This is my little guys first summer and we have already found out that diapers don’t go well with the pool. Thanks for the contest!
I am so glad you blogged about this… I am not sure how I stumbled upon your post (if I think hard enough, I could figure it out… or just look at my history) but I am a swim instructor (have been for 20 years, *gasp* I feel old!) and hear about “teaching babies to swim” all the time. I do most of my lessons in the summer, travelling from backyard pool to backyard pool.
I am asked to teach an infant to swim at least once a summer, if not more, and I find myself in quite a pickle. I LOVE that parents are excited to get their wee-ones in the water, but far too many of them are looking to “water-proof” their pride and joys. I love working with babies in the water, but I caution all of my families that when I am working with young children, I am only working to make them comfortable in the water and I teach them skills and movements that “may” lead to swimming. I remind them that a child who has learned to swim still needs supervision and that no level of swimming ability is a substitute for the constant, watchful eye of an adult.
I was so sad to hear the play by play of a new swim family who had pulled a visiting child off the bottom of their pool this past Memorial Day weekend, and then called me to get lessons for their youngest child who was a complete non-swimmer. Four lessons later, their once terrified 4 year old is zipping across the pool and loves to explore underwater. I was alarmed when mom, who hovered over us at his first lesson, walked back in the house to “get something” after I had said my good-byes and was walking out their backgate. Needless to say, I waited and repacked my bag o’tricks until she returned.
So long story short, PLEASE watch your kids in the pool. Don’t assume the lifeguard is attentive enough and don’t leave your child to be supervised by another child. It only take a SECOND! Have a safe and splash filled summer!
Great contest & great price for the winner. Everyone should leave comment not to win this contest but to appreciate effort also.
Since Gavin is potty trained now, I guess we wouldn’t need any for him, so we’ll try for the Mediums for Justin. Afterall, if a kid pees in a swim diaper, it just goes right though so it’s no different if he pees in just a swim suit. Thanks for the info. You’re always a good source of honest and unsweetened information
I’ll put your summer saftey link on my blog too.
Sarahs latest blog post… Comfy?
Me, me, Pick me!
What a great topic.
Kandaces latest blog post… You Can’t Put a Price on Blogging Time
hi, thanks for the post. Just thought I’d mention my fav. kind of sunscreen for the kiddos is a spray. Any brand really, just as long as it is spf 30+ and waterproof. Remember to put it on 10 min before going out to play so it has a chance to absorb. Remember to spray legs too!! You wouldn’t think of it since the kids will be in the pool, but those guys can get red too. Little Leah Louise would love to win the set in size Large. Thanks!!
I don’t think i could last through a class like that, I hope it does not give the parents false sence of security of their kids and water
Noreens latest blog post… Swimming in the Bathtub
I would SOOO love to get these! it would do my Florida trip a lot of good in a couple of weeks!
I wish that the sun wasn’t so harmful to us all!
Thank you everyone for signing up! The contest is over and hereby officially closed. I’ll contact the winners as soon as I write up all the names and have Kurtie draw them from a hat.
Carrie M and Noreen – thank you for your comments especially. I would hope that parents never assume that their kids are drown proof just because they’ve had some swimming lessons. Unfortunately I’m sure some become over confident.
Kandace – You are one of the winners. Congratulations! Please email me so I can either get your address or if you’re close enough to me in Western WA we could meet up somewhere.
Liha – Congratulations! You’re one of the winners. Please email me so I can send you you’re Huggies Little Swimmers kit.
