you’re lucky to get a shot — they usually move away quickly when they see someone moving.

We’ve seen them dive bomb a bird twice their size, tho.

Nice shots. I like how you managed to get the woodpecker at different angles.

CatSynth – Thank you. He actually stayed in the same area for quite a while. It was pretty cool and unusual, especially since I had my noisy toddler with me. ;-) Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. Happy Wordless Wednesday to you. :)

It picked a might skinny branch to try and drill an acorn hole into. Maybe it’s a young one.

    Erica Reply:

Sukhmandir Kaur – It looks like an adult to me, but then again I’m no bird-y-ologist. I think he’s just looking for bugs to eat and I’m sure even skinny trees have some of those. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. ;-)

You’ve got some amazing shots there! While vacationing at Yellowstone several years ago, we saw quite a few woodpeckers. We don’t see many of them in Southern California, so it was a real treat. Thanks for sharing!

Carleen – They are pretty cool little buggers. Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. ;-)

    You are so stealth-like Erica…..

    Erica Reply:

G-Man – I had Sophia with me. Believe me there was nothing stealthy about capturing these photos. I just had a good lens and took the opportunity when it presented itself. ;-)

We have a woodpecker that lives in the tree out back. I love listening to him.

My mom has some of these living near her. Every morning they land on the lamp post on her from street and peck at it until all the bugs that died on it over night fall off. Wood peckers on a hollow metal pole are impressive.

Captain Dumbass – We have a woodpecker that comes over to drill the bugs out of the metal siding on our chimney. It does sound impressive. In our case it’s also quite annoying since they only seem to do it on the weekend when we’re trying to sleep in. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. ;-)

Hmmm, my thoughts on woodpeckers…. While this is a beautiful specimen I’m thinking I could do without the one that’s been pecking at the tree outside my bedroom window. But other than that…. nice photos! :-)

    Happy WW!

What a great closeup shot of the woodpecker. We used to hae one here one year but it’s gone now. The noise that it made was somewhat annoying but I enjoyed having a woodpecker because it’s so rare seeing one.

Those pictures are gorgeous! We had a wood pecker in the tree outside of our house the other day, and I couldn’t believe it b/c usually you can hear them but not see them. He was too fast for me to get a picture of, of course! How’d you do it??

    Erica Reply:

Christy – I took the pictures in a park. I wasn’t very close but I had a good lens and zoomed into the picture in Photoshop to focus on the tiny bird. I didn’t hear him at all because the branch he was working on is a tiny willow tree so I wasn’t completely sure what kind of bird I captured until I looked him up on the Internet.
