She has swimming classes twice a week. I took her to the park nearly everyday this summer to socialize with other kids. You’d think such efforts would show results. Her peers string two and three word sentences together. I’ve yet to hear ‘mama’. If I’d continued working, keeping her in daycare, would it be different?

No it would not have been different. She would have been the teacher’s favorite because she is nice and quiet and plays by herself. She would not get much one on one attention because she doesn’t draw attention to herself. Day care workers do love the kids, but just like in a family or classroom, the squeaky wheel…
She is only benefiting from you being at home with her. You are doing the right thing.

Sarah – Thanks
I really appreciate the comment. I’m on pins and needles waiting for them to call so we can get the full evaluation and start therapy. Right now I’m just taking her to as many of the free classes as I can to get her used to the place and staff.

Though it can be hard not to second guess, I’d have to say that keeping her in daycare would probably not have made a significant difference. Sophia is quite obviously a very smart little girl and you being proactive about getting her help at a young age will pay dividends. Keep putting one foot in front of the other, and take each day as it comes. You’re an awesome mom, with wonderful instincts.
(Erica, I don’t have Skype – mostly because I don’t have a webcam – but would love to talk!)

Maggie – aaww thanks
You don’t *need* a webcam for Skype. Is your number still the same as uumm five or six years ago? I think I may still have it. *digging through my files*

You are clearly a great mom. I too have wondered the same thing when wondering why Chloe can’t do what her peers can. She is clearly very bright. Maybe she doesn’t feel like she needs to share yet? Now, what’s Chloe’s excuse?

Susan Anderson – I’m not sure what the problem is. I hope we either figure it out or it just spontaneously fixes itself – kind of like when the computer goes wonky and I turn it off wait a bit, turn it on, and like magic it’s all better. *shrug*

you watch out cause once they get started!! you will wonder how she ever held it in!
We watched a video last night with our youngest now 17. She very very rarely spoke and only when she absolutely had to! She was very tickled to watch herself get things done with such few words!
loved your words!
