Just Another Splash For The Adrenalin Junkie

As we got ready for the day I told Sophia, “Come on let’s get ready for swimming.”

“Splash!” She said excitedly.

Great, yeah I’m going to get splashed a lot. There really isn’t any point to me putting my hair up in a bun is there? Sophia enjoyed jumping off the edge of the wall into my arms several times. On one occasion, she jumped before I said three and I was able to catch her before she was all the way in the water. The instructors frequently emphasis the importance of teaching the kids only jump when the cue is given, but this is the only time it feels like a dog obedience class for toddlers.

Then on one occasion after I gave the ok, Sophia didn’t quite jump, but instead slipped and rolled into the pool. I was standing at a jump distance and not prepared for the roll into the water. She went under and I saw bubbles floating up. I pulled her up. She looked scared. She didn’t cough at all so I guess I moved faster than it felt like I did. I must have retrieved her before she inhaled water. I was probably much more afraid than she was, but I hid my fear well or the child just recovers much more quickly than I expect. She almost immediately pointed to the edge of the pool indicating she wanted to go again, and she did. I think my heart continued to pound well after the class.

Super Morphin Mega Monkey

Last week when I told a friend that I was taking Sophia to the park for the day, she suggested I bring my camera because I hadn’t sent her pictures in a while, so I did. The only thing is I had a hard time taking any pictures of the daredevil that day. Going down the slide face first was the least crazy new thing she did.

Down the slide head firstRunning back to me to give me her cupSweeping her hair away from her face

That day she also decided to try going down the firefighter pole without me standing nearby. I saw her stand on the edge and lean out as she usually does to yell out to me, but then unlike her usual, she reached for the pole. “WAIT!” I shouted, “Let me help you.” I about had a heart attack. Thankfully the little power ranger that could is at least obedient and waited for her mother to waddle over to her. I helped her hang onto the pole and showed her how to wrap her legs around it. She had watched enough other kids do it that she had the basic idea, but I wanted to be there to make sure she didn’t bounce her head off the ground.

She slid down the pole about three times and each time I held on and guided her down a little less. The fourth time the super monkey just held the pole tightly, lingered at the top, and then came down slowly…hand under hand. Holy fucking shit she is a strong little monkey! She did that another couple of times just to show off.

Evil Knievel Child

Last night Sophia was on her way to giving me a heart attack. She still likes to ride the rocking horse that her Auntie Vicky gave her for Christmas last year. Only now not only does she try to rock standing up but also without holding on to the handles. She was also rocking on it so hard (while actually hanging on) that she nearly tipped backwards. Maybe I’ll rethink my stance on bicycle helmets.

Pregnancy updates

So, what have I been doing for the past week? On Wednesday the 15th, I noticed my first stretch marks. I’m so disappointed, but they aren’t on my belly. They’re on my lower back/the very top of my butt. I would say it’s just below my waistline, but it’s hard to tell where that is/was these days. I think the stretch marks are from my hips spreading, maybe? Anyway, they’re there and they’re ugly red streaks.

On Friday the 17th, I had my monthly doctor appointment. Sophia’s heart rate is still the same, and she’s kicking/moving a lot. I’ve gained five pounds since my last appointment. For those of you who have lost track that means I now weigh in at 165 pounds. I’ve been warned that at my next appointment I get to have a vaginal and anal swab for strep – oh joyous days. On the up side, he gave me some pills to help with the heartburn – YAY!! My next appointment will be next week and after that, I’ll have weekly appointments. I’m so scared and excited, mostly scared.

Glucose Test

Oh isn’t that a fun implement of legal torture. Actually the taste wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, but it still made me feel ill. I don’t think it helped that my blood preasure was way up while I was at my doctor appoinment yesterday. I was thinking about a meeting I had to go to at work and I clearly wasn’t looking forward to it. They had to have me lay down for a bit before taking my blood test, but other than that everything went swimmingly. Sophia was kicking up a storm – too much sugar? The doctor put the goopy stuff on my belly so we could hear her heart rate and she kicked at it several times as if it was a target. Her heart rate was a bit faster than usual too. Typically it’s at 144, but yesterday at the appointment it was 148. The doctor didn’t seem concerned, so I guess it’s still fine. My belly is still growing, my uterus is in the right place, and I only gained two pounds since my last appointment. I’m pretty happy about that. I think it’s only because I’m not as interested in eating due to all food including COTTAGE CHEESE causing me heartburn.

I swear my stomach is noticeably growing by the hour. This morning I left for work by going through our garage that is slowly being taken over by baby things and tried to squeeze between Kurt’s motorcycle and car. When that didn’t seem to work I did what the non-pregnant me would typically do and turned sideways…that didn’t have the effect I expected. Apparently I’m a cube now.
